Subtitling

Subtitling & transcription

Your videos. Your message. An international reach.

Multilingual videos increase your reach – but only if the subtitles are professional

Whether it’s a corporate film, e-learning video or marketing short, well-made subtitles in English or in other languages make content accessible, increase understanding and reinforce your international communication – especially for viewers who are non-native speakers of English.

I am a trained translator with a Master’s degree in linguistics and I specialise in subtitling and transcription for companies, agencies and educational institutions.

Why you should use professional subtitling

Automatically generated subtitles rarely deliver stellar results. Mistranslations, incorrect addresses, unclean separations, texts that are too long or out of time with the video – all this comes across as unprofessional. High-quality subtitling, on the other hand, takes into account:

  • A clear reading speed & rhythm to the subtitles
  • Correct timing & format (e.g. line separation, character limits)
  • A consistent tone (formal/informal)
  • Linguistic nuances & cultural context

This is not a simple translation, it also means localising your content on a linguistic and cultural level, allowing you to effectively get your message across to your target audience.

English subtitles for companies & education

There are many requirements when it comes to subtitling for companies and educational institutions: Subtitles for multilingual e-learning videos must translate content and technical terms correctly, clearly and a way that prioritises learning and considers the participants’ varied linguistic backgrounds.

For marketing videos, such as for websites or trade fairs, it’s more the emotional impact of the message that needs to shine through despite the subtitling specifications, and for the business sector, maintaining the corporate identity is key.

English subtitling of focus groups and studies in the social sciences, specialisations in both marketing translations and linguistics are a great advantage. Conversations in these types of studies are often encouraged to be as natural as possible, which can mean particular challengers for subtitlers, with participants often talking very quickly and out of turn.

English subtitling (CC/SDH) and PLDL creation – by an experienced subtitler

PLDL – Pivot Language Dialogue List as a basis for your translations

A Pivot Language Dialogue List (PLDL) is much more than just a bilingual transcript of a film or video. It’s a detailed, structured template with time codes and speaker assignments that also documents decisive cultural, stylistic and linguistic information. This information helps subsequent translators to make informed and contextual decisions, especially when the subtitler has no knowledge of the original language.

This detailed approach makes PLDLs an indispensable tool in international media translation – whether it’s for film festivals, TV series or corporate advertising. Creating such lists requires a thorough understanding of language, culture and translation processes. Thanks to extensive experience in creating such templates as well as my work as linguist and subtitler, I am very qualified to take on this task with professional precision.
